A STATUE OF JOHN Plankinton looked on benevolently as dancers whirled in the rotunda of the Plankinton Arcade, scene of the landmark ball presented Saturday night by the Florentine Opera Club. The four "arms" of the arcade accomodated the Dave Kennedy Orchestra and tables for dining, and the 350 guests found ample room on three levels. Potted trees, boxes of blooming flowers and white wrought iron tables added a palm garden atmosphere, while large pictures of milwaukee landmarks, suspended like banners, underlined the salute to downtown's west side. Acting Gov. Schreiber, Mayor Maier and County Executive O'Donnell all attended with their wives - "really a landmark," one ballgoer commented. Patricia A. Gerczak, the ball chairman, reported that the ball raised $22,500, which - added to the maximum grant available from the National Endowment for the Arts - means $40,000 for the Milwaukee Florentine Opera Company. Some ballgoers left empty seats at the Milwaukee Symphony Concert, but others went to the concert first and arrived late at the ball, like conductor Kenneth Schermerhorn in his "Dracula" opera cape. Those who made a night of it, started at preball parties at six historic sites.
