THE LAST CHANCE was the cahairity ball that evening under the green and white striped tent at the Holiday Inn Super Club (no relation to the hotel chain) in nearby Minocqua, where for$20 a head, guests could nibble canapes and gawk at Taylor.
Taylor was 30 minutes late. Shortly before her arrival, heralded via walkie-talkie, reporters were herded behind the ropes next to the dance floor and commanded to stay put or face eviction. Sweeping out of her limousine to a barrage of clicking shutters, Taylor did not disapoint. She wore a royal blue flowering chiffon Halston gown, slit up the front, with a large diamond broach pinned at her ample cleavage. THE WARNERS whirled around the dance floor to the Dave Kennedy Band's rendition of "The Shadow of Your Smile." They exchanged partners with the Edwards. It was like a wedding reception. Two women guests crowded up to the ropes with the reporters. "Yeah, I think it's big enough," said one, referring to Taylor's diamond ring. "I touched her," repeated a tipsy woman in a white dress. "I actually touched Elizabeth Taylor." |
